HYDROFEND SH-1
SUPERHYDROPHOBIC (1-Step Coating)

HYDROFEND SH-1 is a superhydrophobic 1-step coating used on marine and ground-based microwave antennas, 5G antennas, radomes, and other telecom equipment to prevent rain fade. SH-1 is highly durable and significantly reduces snow and ice accumulation.

Key Features & Benefits

  • RF Transparent: HYDROFEND SH-1 coatings allow radio frequency signals to pass through with minimal interference.

  • Rain Fade Reduction: Helps reduce signal attenuation caused by rain, ice, and snow.

  • Minimizes Signal Loss: Performs effectively in Ku and Ka bands for optimal signal quality.

  • Prevents Water Film Formation: Eliminates the chance of signal distortion due to moisture buildup.

Major Applications

  • Protects Satellite and Antenna Equipment: Reduces signal loss in satellite dishes, radomes, antenna arrays, and flat panel antennas.

  • Improves Performance of Environmental Sensors: Minimizes signal degradation on wind and radiometric sensors in wet environments.

  • Prevents Ice and Snow Buildup: Shields mid-path passive reflectors and repeaters.

  • Shields Moisture-Sensitive Equipment: Safeguards circuit boards, motors, switches, and connectors.

HYDROFEND SH-1 is a 1-step, air-dry, superhydrophobic coating developed by Chemodyn.

When coated with SH-1, water beads up and rolls off the surface. This prevents the formation of water films and helps reduce ice buildup.

The coated surface has a frosted look due to the presence of nanoparticles. Superhydrophobic performance is maintained under most conditions for extended periods.

This coating is ideal for anti-wetting, anti-icing, and anti-snow applications.

SH-1 effectively repels rain, ice, and snow for years. While the surface may be cleaned using a hose spray, physical handling or rubbing can reduce its performance.

Spray application ensures the best finish and most uniform coverage. Coverage depends on the thickness applied — one gallon typically covers 200 to 400 square feet.

  • Application: Roll-on (gravity feed HVLP for large projects)

  • Drying time: 2 hours

  • Colors: Frosty-White (Frosty-Tan and Frosty-Gray available)

  • Flammable solvents: yes

  • Storage temperature: 20-30°C

  • Shelf life: 1 year

  • Durability: 1 – 5 years (varies based on environmental conditions)

  • Dielectric constant: 3 at 100 MHz

  • Electrical resistivity: ~2 tera ohms

  • Rework-ability: Easy to remove and rework

  • Thickness: ~20 micrometers
